A plain-English guide for Mesa (Maricopa County) drivers: where to pay, whether to fight it, whether traffic school can save your record, and when a lawyer is worth it.

1Where do I pay the ticket?

Never pay through a random site. Use the court’s official portal:

Your ticket names the court handling your case. If you’re not sure which court, use the official finder:

Mesa details, verified against the City of Mesa

  • Arizona civil traffic citations go to the city or town court where the citation was issued, or to a Justice Court when the citation came from DPS or the county sheriff outside city limits - City of Mesa - court and citation information.
  • You have two main ways to keep it off your record. Pay the sanction (a conviction, with points assessed by the MVD) or attend Defensive Driving School, which dismisses an eligible civil traffic violation. Arizona allows DDS once every 24 months, and you must not hold a commercial licence or have committed another violation in the last 24 months. The courts' statewide portal is azcourts.gov/drive.
  • Arizona's point thresholds are strict: 8 or more points in 12 months can bring a suspension or restriction from the MVD, and points from a conviction sit on the record for 12 to 24 months depending on the violation.
  • Paying is a conviction, so if you want DDS or a civil traffic hearing, act before you pay - the citation gives you a response deadline and the court will not undo a payment afterwards.
  • Arizona's surcharges are the reason the total is much higher than the base fine, and the court's financial obligation search is the only reliable way to see the real number for your citation before you pay.
  • Mesa citations go to the Mesa Municipal Court, one of the largest city courts in Arizona; citations from the county sheriff or DPS outside city limits go to a Maricopa County Justice Court.
  • Mesa is a large, spread-out city with long arterials (US-60, Loop 202, Power Road) and speed enforcement to match, and it uses both officer stops and photo enforcement - a mailed photo citation follows the same civil process as one handed to you.
  • Defensive Driving School is the Mesa record-saver: once every 24 months, no commercial licence, no other violation in 24 months, and it dismisses an eligible civil traffic violation so nothing reaches your insurer. Register through the Arizona courts' DDS portal.
  • Arizona's surcharges are what turn a modest base fine into a large bill; the court's financial obligation search shows the real total for your citation before you decide how to plead.

2How much will it cost?

Arizona sets the civil traffic sanction from a statewide schedule and then adds state, county and city surcharges, which can more than double the base fine. The court's financial obligation search shows the actual number for your citation.

Don’t just look at the fine. For a moving violation, the real cost is the fine plus the insurance increase, which can last up to three years. Arizona tracks points on your MVD record and an accumulation can lead to a licence suspension and/or a mandatory class.

3Should I fight it, or just pay?

4Can traffic school save my record?

Arizona's defensive driving program can get an eligible civil traffic violation dismissed: if you complete a class at an Arizona Supreme Court certified school, the school notifies the court and the charge is dismissed from your record. Most drivers can use it once every 24 months, and CDL holders generally cannot.

5Do I need a lawyer?

For a simple moving violation a lawyer typically costs $250-$500 typical for a simple civil traffic violation. It’s usually worth it when the insurance increase, or your job (CDL, company car), outweighs that fee.

6Do I have to show up in court?

It depends on the ticket. Many moving violations can be handled online or by mail; others require a court date. Check the court named on your ticket before the deadline — missing a deadline can add penalties or suspend your license.

Common questions

Will paying the ticket raise my insurance?

For a moving violation, usually yes — often for up to three years. Non-moving and parking tickets usually don’t.

What if I just ignore it?

Don’t. Unpaid tickets can lead to extra fines, a suspended license, or a warrant. Every option above is better than ignoring it.
