Got a Traffic Ticket in Indianapolis, IN? Here’s What To Do Next
A plain-English guide for Indianapolis (Marion County) drivers: where to pay, whether to fight it, whether traffic school can save your record, and when a lawyer is worth it.
The 30-second answer
You usually have four options: pay the fine, contest it yourself, take traffic school, or hire a lawyer. The right choice depends on whether it’s a moving violation and whether you have a good-driving record to protect.

1Where do I pay the ticket?
Never pay through a random site. Use the court’s official portal:

Your ticket names the court handling your case. If you’re not sure which court, use the official finder:

Indianapolis details, checked against the city and the state courts
- Indianapolis citations are handled by the Marion County Traffic Division, which processes infractions, moving violations and traffic misdemeanours for the city.
- In person: the main location is the Community Justice Campus, 675 Justice Way. There is also a counter in Room W122, City-County Building, 200 E. Washington Street. Both are open Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and both take cash and cards.
- By mail: a money order or cashier's cheque to Marion County Traffic Division, 200 E. Washington Street, Indianapolis, IN 46204, with a copy of the ticket. Do not mail cash, and do not assume a personal cheque will be accepted for every ticket type.
- Look the case up in MyCase first. Indiana's state case system shows the charges, the hearing dates and the amount owed, and it is free.
- The due date on an Indiana citation is 60 days from the day you received it. Miss it and the case can be escalated to a failure to appear, which adds costs and can affect your licence.
- Indiana assesses points through the BMV: 14 to 18 points brings a warning letter and 20 points a one-month suspension, escalating from there. A BMV-approved defensive-driving course can reduce points, and courts often accept one instead of a conviction - ask before you enrol.
2How much will it cost?
Indiana fines come with court costs, and the traffic division collects both. Check the amount on the citation or in MyCase before you pay.
Don’t just look at the fine. For a moving violation, the real cost is the fine plus the insurance increase, which can last up to three years. Indiana assesses points through the BMV: 14 to 18 points brings a warning letter, 20 points a one-month suspension, and it escalates from there (Indiana Administrative Code, 140 IAC 1). Reckless driving and major offences carry their own penalties.
3Should I fight it, or just pay?
| Option | Best when | Typical cost |
|---|---|---|
| Just pay | It’s a non-moving / fix-it ticket, or you don’t mind the point | Just the fine |
| Contest it yourself | The officer’s account is wrong, or the sign/light was unclear | Free (your time) |
| Traffic school | You’re eligible and want to keep the point off your record | Fine + small course fee |
| Hire a lawyer | A moving violation + a record you can’t afford to damage | $250-$500 typical for a simple moving violation |

4Can traffic school save my record?
Indiana's BMV-approved defensive driving / driver safety programmes can reduce points and are often accepted by courts in place of a conviction. Which course and whether it helps is decided by the court and the BMV, so ask before you enrol.

5Do I need a lawyer?
For a simple moving violation a lawyer typically costs $250-$500 typical for a simple moving violation. It’s usually worth it when the insurance increase, or your job (CDL, company car), outweighs that fee.
6Do I have to show up in court?
It depends on the ticket. Many moving violations can be handled online or by mail; others require a court date. Check the court named on your ticket before the deadline — missing a deadline can add penalties or suspend your license.
Common questions
Will paying the ticket raise my insurance?
For a moving violation, usually yes — often for up to three years. Non-moving and parking tickets usually don’t.
What if I just ignore it?
Don’t. Unpaid tickets can lead to extra fines, a suspended license, or a warrant. Every option above is better than ignoring it.
