Got a Traffic Ticket in Cambridge, MA? Here’s What To Do Next
A plain-English guide for Cambridge (Middlesex County) drivers: where to pay, whether to fight it, whether traffic school can save your record, and when a lawyer is worth it.
The 30-second answer
You usually have four options: pay the fine, contest it yourself, take traffic school, or hire a lawyer. The right choice depends on whether it’s a moving violation and whether you have a good-driving record to protect.

1Where do I pay the ticket?
Never pay through a random site. Use the court’s official portal:
🔗 MassDOT / RMV - pay your traffic ticket
Your ticket names the court handling your case. If you’re not sure which court, use the official finder:

Cambridge details, verified against the Massachusetts RMV process
- Cambridge citations go to the RMV, not to a Cambridge court. In Massachusetts the Registry decides the citation and the court only comes in if you appeal a 'responsible' finding.
- The 20-day window from the citation date is the whole deadline. Miss it and the RMV adds late and release fees, then moves toward a 30-day suspension after the default notice.
- Massachusetts does not use points, and no course removes a ticket. The consequence that matters is the insurer's SDIP surcharge after a 'responsible' finding.
- An appeal goes to the District Court - Cambridge District Court for a Cambridge citation - and it is a second hearing on the same issue, not a new trial.
- Three surchargeable events in two years means the RMV's Driver Retraining Program is compulsory; nothing about it removes the earlier findings.
- Cambridge enforcement is unusual in one respect: the city issues a lot of camera and bus-lane type violations alongside police citations, and those can run on a different, city-level track from an RMV citation. Read what you were actually issued.
- Paying the citation is what produces the 'responsible' finding, which is what produces the surcharge. If the surcharge is the problem, do not pay first.
2How much will it cost?
Massachusetts fines are set by statute and printed on the citation. Miss the 20-day window and the RMV adds late and release fees on top of the fine, then suspends your licence if you do not pay within 30 days of the default letter - so the deadline costs more than the ticket.
Don’t just look at the fine. For a moving violation, the real cost is the fine plus the insurance increase, which can last up to three years. Massachusetts does not use points. Insurers assign SDIP surcharge points after a 'responsible' finding, which raises your premium for years - which is why the hearing matters more than the fine.
3Should I fight it, or just pay?
| Option | Best when | Typical cost |
|---|---|---|
| Just pay | It’s a non-moving / fix-it ticket, or you don’t mind the point | Just the fine |
| Contest it yourself | The officer’s account is wrong, or the sign/light was unclear | Free (your time) |
| Traffic school | You’re eligible and want to keep the point off your record | Fine + small course fee |
| Hire a lawyer | A moving violation + a record you can’t afford to damage | $300-$600 typical for a Massachusetts traffic citation |

Answer three questions. There is nothing to type — no name, no citation number. We only record which options people choose (anonymously, so we know which cities and questions need work); the recommendation itself is calculated in your browser.
4Can traffic school save my record?
Massachusetts has no course that dismisses a ticket. What protects you is winning or amending the citation at a hearing - insurance surcharges follow 'responsible' findings, not course credits. Only drivers with three surchargeable events in two years are required to complete the RMV's Driver Retraining Program.

5Do I need a lawyer?
For a simple moving violation a lawyer typically costs $300-$600 typical for a Massachusetts traffic citation. It’s usually worth it when the insurance increase, or your job (CDL, company car), outweighs that fee.
6Do I have to show up in court?
It depends on the ticket. Many moving violations can be handled online or by mail; others require a court date. Check the court named on your ticket before the deadline — missing a deadline can add penalties or suspend your license.

Common questions
Will paying the ticket raise my insurance?
For a moving violation, usually yes — often for up to three years. Non-moving and parking tickets usually don’t.
What if I just ignore it?
Don’t. Unpaid tickets can lead to extra fines, a suspended license, or a warrant. Every option above is better than ignoring it.
