Got a Traffic Ticket in Memphis, TN? Here’s What To Do Next
A plain-English guide for Memphis (Shelby County) drivers: where to pay, whether to fight it, whether traffic school can save your record, and when a lawyer is worth it.
The 30-second answer
You usually have four options: pay the fine, contest it yourself, take traffic school, or hire a lawyer. The right choice depends on whether it’s a moving violation and whether you have a good-driving record to protect.

1Where do I pay the ticket?
Never pay through a random site. Use the court’s official portal:

Your ticket names the court handling your case. If you’re not sure which court, use the official finder:

Memphis details, verified against Shelby County courts
- Memphis is in Shelby County, and traffic citations issued in the city or the county are generally heard in Shelby County General Sessions Court (the criminal/traffic divisions) rather than in a municipal court - so the county court, not the city, is where the case lives.
- That distinction matters at the counter: a Memphis police citation, a Shelby County sheriff's citation and a state trooper's citation can all end up in the same General Sessions building, with a docket rather than a fixed hearing time.
- Tennessee assesses points through the Department of Safety - 12 points in 12 months can produce a proposed suspension - and the record lasts for years, so a Memphis moving violation is worth taking seriously even when the fine looks small.
- The two Tennessee record tools are a court-ordered traffic school dismissal (if the judge allows it) and the Department of Safety's 5-point removal for an approved 4-hour course on a speeding conviction: see the state traffic school page. Providers must file the certificate within 30 days, so ask who files it.
- Payments, payment plans and case questions run through the court clerk's office, and the county's site is the safest starting point - third-party 'ticket payment' sites that ask for a card and a citation number are not the court.
- Unpaid Tennessee traffic cases can turn into a licence block through the Department of Safety, and courts add costs and, in some cases, a failure-to-appear charge on top of the original fine.
2How much will it cost?
Fines and court costs vary by violation. Check the court's current fine schedule, and treat the amount printed on your citation as the real number.
Don’t just look at the fine. For a moving violation, the real cost is the fine plus the insurance increase, which can last up to three years. Tennessee's Department of Safety runs a driver-improvement point system: 12 points in 12 months can bring a proposed suspension and a hearing. Points stay on your record for years, and it is the insurance effect that usually costs the most.
3Should I fight it, or just pay?
| Option | Best when | Typical cost |
|---|---|---|
| Just pay | It’s a non-moving / fix-it ticket, or you don’t mind the point | Just the fine |
| Contest it yourself | The officer’s account is wrong, or the sign/light was unclear | Free (your time) |
| Traffic school | You’re eligible and want to keep the point off your record | Fine + small course fee |
| Hire a lawyer | A moving violation + a record you can’t afford to damage | $250-$500 typical for a simple moving violation |

4Can traffic school save my record?
Tennessee does let a course help, in two different ways. A court-ordered traffic school can get a citation dismissed if the judge allows it, and separately the Department of Safety will remove up to 5 points from a speeding conviction if you complete an approved 4-hour driver education course. Course providers must send your certificate to the Department within 30 days, so ask the school who files it.

5Do I need a lawyer?
For a simple moving violation a lawyer typically costs $250-$500 typical for a simple moving violation. It’s usually worth it when the insurance increase, or your job (CDL, company car), outweighs that fee.
6Do I have to show up in court?
It depends on the ticket. Many moving violations can be handled online or by mail; others require a court date. Check the court named on your ticket before the deadline — missing a deadline can add penalties or suspend your license.

Common questions
Will paying the ticket raise my insurance?
For a moving violation, usually yes — often for up to three years. Non-moving and parking tickets usually don’t.
What if I just ignore it?
Don’t. Unpaid tickets can lead to extra fines, a suspended license, or a warrant. Every option above is better than ignoring it.
