1Where do I pay the ticket?

Never pay through a random site. Use the court’s official portal:

🔗 San Diego Superior Court - make a payment (traffic and minor offences)

Your ticket names the court handling your case. If you’re not sure which court, use the official finder:

🔗 San Diego Superior Court - Traffic (appear-by dates, extensions, payment, civil assessment)

Chula Vista details, verified against San Diego Superior Court

  • A Chula Vista ticket is filed with the Superior Court of California, County of San Diego, Traffic Division, and South County cases are heard at the court's Chula Vista location. The courthouse printed on your citation is the one that owns the case - San Diego County runs traffic operations across several locations.
  • The date on your ticket is an 'appear by' date, not a hearing date. The court is explicit: it is the deadline by which you must act - pay, request an extension, or set a hearing. Nothing happens automatically in your favour if you wait.
  • Pay through the court's Make a Payment page. San Diego also lets you handle the case by mail, over the phone or online, but only by that appear-by date.
  • Appointments are required to appear. The county states you cannot simply walk in and appear on a traffic case - you must schedule the court appearance in advance, which matters if you intend to contest.
  • Miss the appear-by date and the consequences stack: the court's page lists a $100 civil assessment added to the original bail under Penal Code 1214.1, possible new charges or a warrant, and referral to a collection agency.
  • The reminder notice arrives about two weeks before your promise-to-appear date, not immediately. If you move, fix your address with the court - the notice is a courtesy and the deadline stands either way.
  • Traffic school: valid California licence, no traffic school in the last 18 months, no mandatory appearance. California's statewide explanation and the DMV's approved school list are at selfhelp.courts.ca.gov/traffic/traffic-school.
  • Cannot pay in full? San Diego County offers ability-to-pay relief on MyCitations - a lower fine, a payment plan or community service - and the court can reconsider if your finances change.
  • South County parking tickets (Chula Vista, National City, Imperial Beach) are city cases and are paid to the city, not the court.

2How much will it cost?

Fines vary by violation and county. Check the court's current bail/fine schedule - the amount on your court notice is the real number.

Don’t just look at the fine. For a moving violation, the real cost is the fine plus the insurance increase, which can last up to three years. A moving violation adds a point to your DMV record, which can raise your insurance for up to 3 years.

3Should I fight it, or just pay?

Answer three questions. There is nothing to type — no name, no citation number. We only record which options people choose (anonymously, so we know which cities and questions need work); the recommendation itself is calculated in your browser.

4Can traffic school save my record?

In California you can usually take traffic school once every 18 months to keep a point off a moving violation, if the violation is eligible. Your court notice says whether you qualify.

5Do I need a lawyer?

For a simple moving violation a lawyer typically costs $250-$500 typical for a simple moving violation. It’s usually worth it when the insurance increase, or your job (CDL, company car), outweighs that fee.

6Do I have to show up in court?

It depends on the ticket. Many moving violations can be handled online or by mail; others require a court date. Check the court named on your ticket before the deadline — missing a deadline can add penalties or suspend your license.

Common questions

Will paying the ticket raise my insurance?

For a moving violation, usually yes — often for up to three years. Non-moving and parking tickets usually don’t.

What if I just ignore it?

Don’t. Unpaid tickets can lead to extra fines, a suspended license, or a warrant. Every option above is better than ignoring it.
