Got a Traffic Ticket in Oakland, CA? Here’s What To Do Next
A plain-English guide for Oakland (Alameda County) drivers: where to pay, whether to fight it, whether traffic school can save your record, and when a lawyer is worth it.
The 30-second answer
You usually have four options: pay the fine, contest it yourself, take traffic school, or hire a lawyer. The right choice depends on whether it’s a moving violation and whether you have a good-driving record to protect.

1Where do I pay the ticket?
Never pay through a random site. Use the court’s official portal:
🔗 Alameda County Superior Court - look up and pay your traffic ticket
Your ticket names the court handling your case. If you’re not sure which court, use the official finder:

Oakland details, verified against Alameda County Superior Court
- Alameda County citations go to the Superior Court of California, County of Alameda, Traffic Division. Its three traffic courthouses are Fremont, Oakland (Wiley W. Manuel Courthouse) and Dublin (East County Hall of Justice) - the citation names the one that has your case.
- The court's online system (alameda.epay-it.com) lets you: forfeit bail or pay a fine/fee, post bail for a court trial, post bail and request a trial by declaration, pay traffic school fees (bail plus enrolment fee), make a payment on an existing payment plan, extend your citation due date, fine due date or traffic-school completion date, confirm the court received your traffic-school certificate, and look up your ticket or print your courtesy notice.
- Traffic school eligibility - you must meet all of it: pay the bail amount and the state-mandated traffic-school administrative fee before enrolling (on top of whatever the school charges); hold a valid licence at the time you were cited (since 13 Sep 2012 CDL holders driving a non-commercial vehicle are eligible); not have attended traffic school in the last 18 months (Veh. Code 1808.7 keeps only one citation per 18 months confidential, counted from violation date to violation date, not the class date); the citation must be a moving violation, not a misdemeanour, and you must not have been driving a commercial vehicle; the violation must not require a mandatory court appearance; nothing involving alcohol or drugs; not Veh. Code 22406.5 or 21655.5; and 25 mph or more over the limit is not eligible. Any failure to appear, warrant or civil assessment must be cleared or paid in full first.
- Finish the course and file the certificate in time and, under Veh. Code 42007, the DMV keeps the conviction confidential - it will not show on your driving record. If you are eligible and skip traffic school, your auto insurance can be affected (Veh. Code 42007(f)).
- Can't afford the fine? You can ask the court to lower it, set up a payment plan, give you more time, or do community service instead - see the court's financial hardship and ability-to-pay page.
- Delinquent fines are referred to the court's collection agency, and the court's online payment tool does not work for delinquent fines: pay on the collection agency's website or call them on (844) 544-5358.
- Scam alert posted by the court: scammers are impersonating the court's Pretrial Services to collect payment for GPS monitoring. The court does not collect money that way.
2How much will it cost?
Fines vary by violation and county. Check the court's current bail/fine schedule - the amount on your court notice is the real number.
Don’t just look at the fine. For a moving violation, the real cost is the fine plus the insurance increase, which can last up to three years. A moving violation adds a point to your DMV record, which can raise your insurance for up to 3 years.
3Should I fight it, or just pay?
| Option | Best when | Typical cost |
|---|---|---|
| Just pay | It’s a non-moving / fix-it ticket, or you don’t mind the point | Just the fine |
| Contest it yourself | The officer’s account is wrong, or the sign/light was unclear | Free (your time) |
| Traffic school | You’re eligible and want to keep the point off your record | Fine + small course fee |
| Hire a lawyer | A moving violation + a record you can’t afford to damage | $250-$500 typical for a simple moving violation |

4Can traffic school save my record?
In California you can usually take traffic school once every 18 months to keep a point off a moving violation, if the violation is eligible. Your court notice says whether you qualify.

5Do I need a lawyer?
For a simple moving violation a lawyer typically costs $250-$500 typical for a simple moving violation. It’s usually worth it when the insurance increase, or your job (CDL, company car), outweighs that fee.
6Do I have to show up in court?
It depends on the ticket. Many moving violations can be handled online or by mail; others require a court date. Check the court named on your ticket before the deadline — missing a deadline can add penalties or suspend your license.

Common questions
Will paying the ticket raise my insurance?
For a moving violation, usually yes — often for up to three years. Non-moving and parking tickets usually don’t.
What if I just ignore it?
Don’t. Unpaid tickets can lead to extra fines, a suspended license, or a warrant. Every option above is better than ignoring it.
