Got a Traffic Ticket in Athens, GA? Here’s What To Do Next

A plain-English guide for Athens (Clarke County) drivers: where to pay, whether to fight it, whether traffic school can save your record, and when a lawyer is worth it.

The 30-second answer

You usually have four options: pay the fine, contest it yourself, take traffic school, or hire a lawyer. The right choice depends on whether it’s a moving violation and whether you have a good-driving record to protect.

1Where do I pay the ticket?

Never pay through a random site. Use the court’s official portal:

Your ticket names the court handling your case. If you’re not sure which court, use the official finder:

Athens details, verified against Athens-Clarke County

  • The Municipal Court of Athens-Clarke County handles all Athens-Clarke ordinance violations and all state misdemeanour traffic violations, including DUI, and it runs about 35,000 cases a year - a real traffic court, not a ticket window.
  • Court sessions are held Monday through Thursday most weeks, with Friday sessions only as needed. If you are setting a date or asking for a plea, that schedule is the one you are working around.
  • Athens-Clarke takes online fines at athensgatix.com, and by phone toll free at 1-855-873-9708. Paying through that portal is still a guilty plea in Georgia.
  • The court's own contact is 706-613-3690 and municipalcourt@accgov.com - useful when you need to ask whether your violation can be handled without an appearance.
  • Because this court takes misdemeanour traffic as well as traffic infractions, a DUI or a reckless-driving citation in Athens is a criminal case with a criminal calendar - the payment portal is not the route for those.
  • Georgia's record-protection tool is a nolo contendere plea: reported to DDS, no points, once every five years, subject to the judge.
  • Points still matter: 2-6 per violation, 15 in 24 months is a suspension. Check your offence code in the DDS points schedule.

2How much will it cost?

Georgia sets fines by statute and each municipal or state court adds its own costs, so the fine on a citation written in one city is not the fine in the next one over. If your citation is payable online, the court's look-up shows the amount; if it is not payable, only the judge sets it.

Don’t just look at the fine. For a moving violation, the real cost is the fine plus the insurance increase, which can last up to three years. Georgia assesses 2-6 points per violation, and 15 points in 24 months suspends your licence - DDS publishes the exact point value for every offence code.

3Should I fight it, or just pay?

Answer three questions. There is nothing to type — no name, no citation number. We only record which options people choose (anonymously, so we know which cities and questions need work); the recommendation itself is calculated in your browser.

4Can traffic school save my record?

Georgia has no course that dismisses a ticket. The record-protection tool is a nolo contendere plea: it is reported to DDS and shows on your record, but no points are assessed. You may only use it once every five years, and the judge decides whether to accept it.

5Do I need a lawyer?

For a simple moving violation a lawyer typically costs $300-$600 typical for a Georgia traffic citation. It’s usually worth it when the insurance increase, or your job (CDL, company car), outweighs that fee.

6Do I have to show up in court?

It depends on the ticket. Many moving violations can be handled online or by mail; others require a court date. Check the court named on your ticket before the deadline — missing a deadline can add penalties or suspend your license.

Common questions

Will paying the ticket raise my insurance?

For a moving violation, usually yes — often for up to three years. Non-moving and parking tickets usually don’t.

What if I just ignore it?

Don’t. Unpaid tickets can lead to extra fines, a suspended license, or a warrant. Every option above is better than ignoring it.
