Got a Traffic Ticket in Macon, GA? Here’s What To Do Next
A plain-English guide for Macon (Bibb County) drivers: where to pay, whether to fight it, whether traffic school can save your record, and when a lawyer is worth it.
The 30-second answer
You usually have four options: pay the fine, contest it yourself, take traffic school, or hire a lawyer. The right choice depends on whether it’s a moving violation and whether you have a good-driving record to protect.

1Where do I pay the ticket?
Never pay through a random site. Use the court’s official portal:
🔗 State Court of Bibb County - payment options and court information
Your ticket names the court handling your case. If you’re not sure which court, use the official finder:
🔗 Macon-Bibb County - traffic citation: which court has your ticket
Macon-Bibb details, verified against the county's traffic citation page
- Macon-Bibb is the clearest example in Georgia of why you read the citation: payable citations are written to either Macon Municipal Court or Bibb State Court, and the county tells you to look at the bottom half of the citation to find out which.
- The two courts have separate payment routes and separate phone numbers: 478-751-7154 for Municipal Court citations, 478-310-4726 for Bibb State Court citations, and the State Court clerk is on 478-621-6200.
- Bibb County State Court warns that many citations are issued for Macon-Bibb Municipal Court, which is not this court - a separate website and a separate process. Paying at the wrong one does not stop the clock.
- The county posts a scam warning: messages telling drivers to pay through a look-alike site are not legitimate DDS or Bibb State Court communications. Go to the court's own page, or the state portal, and nowhere else.
- Georgia treats paying a citation before the listed court date as an admission of guilt. That is what posts the DDS points and what your insurer eventually sees.
- Drivers under 21 are told by the courts themselves to contact DDS before paying, because the consequences of payment differ by age - good advice at any age, given the points are 2-6 per violation and 15 in 24 months means a suspension.
- The record-saving route in Georgia is a nolo contendere plea - no points, reported to DDS, once every five years, at the judge's discretion.
- If you need to be excused from a State Court date, the court asks for contact at least 72 hours in advance and warns that leaving a voicemail does not relieve you of the duty to appear. Missing a criminal traffic date can produce a warrant.
2How much will it cost?
Georgia sets fines by statute and each municipal or state court adds its own costs, so the fine on a citation written in one city is not the fine in the next one over. If your citation is payable online, the court's look-up shows the amount; if it is not payable, only the judge sets it.
Don’t just look at the fine. For a moving violation, the real cost is the fine plus the insurance increase, which can last up to three years. Georgia assesses 2-6 points per violation, and 15 points in 24 months suspends your licence - DDS publishes the exact point value for every offence code.
3Should I fight it, or just pay?
| Option | Best when | Typical cost |
|---|---|---|
| Just pay | It’s a non-moving / fix-it ticket, or you don’t mind the point | Just the fine |
| Contest it yourself | The officer’s account is wrong, or the sign/light was unclear | Free (your time) |
| Traffic school | You’re eligible and want to keep the point off your record | Fine + small course fee |
| Hire a lawyer | A moving violation + a record you can’t afford to damage | $300-$600 typical for a Georgia traffic citation |

Answer three questions. There is nothing to type — no name, no citation number. We only record which options people choose (anonymously, so we know which cities and questions need work); the recommendation itself is calculated in your browser.
4Can traffic school save my record?
Georgia has no course that dismisses a ticket. The record-protection tool is a nolo contendere plea: it is reported to DDS and shows on your record, but no points are assessed. You may only use it once every five years, and the judge decides whether to accept it.

5Do I need a lawyer?
For a simple moving violation a lawyer typically costs $300-$600 typical for a Georgia traffic citation. It’s usually worth it when the insurance increase, or your job (CDL, company car), outweighs that fee.
6Do I have to show up in court?
It depends on the ticket. Many moving violations can be handled online or by mail; others require a court date. Check the court named on your ticket before the deadline — missing a deadline can add penalties or suspend your license.

Common questions
Will paying the ticket raise my insurance?
For a moving violation, usually yes — often for up to three years. Non-moving and parking tickets usually don’t.
What if I just ignore it?
Don’t. Unpaid tickets can lead to extra fines, a suspended license, or a warrant. Every option above is better than ignoring it.
