Got a Traffic Ticket in Bend, OR? Here’s What To Do Next

A plain-English guide for Bend (Deschutes County) drivers: where to pay, whether to fight it, whether traffic school can save your record, and when a lawyer is worth it.

The 30-second answer

You usually have four options: pay the fine, contest it yourself, take traffic school, or hire a lawyer. The right choice depends on whether it’s a moving violation and whether you have a good-driving record to protect.

Bend details, verified against the Deschutes County Circuit Court

  • Bend citations go to the Deschutes County Circuit Court, whose courthouse sits in Bend and which handles the county's traffic calendar.
  • Oregon has no points system and no statewide ticket-dismissal course - the DMV holds a record of convictions, and repeated convictions lead into the Driver Improvement Program rather than to a point total.
  • Deferred sentencing or a course in exchange for dismissal exists court by court in Oregon, so whether it is available for your Bend citation is a question for Deschutes County, not a state rule you can look up.
  • Paying the citation creates the conviction on your Oregon driving record - with no points to expire, that record is what follows you.
  • Bend's enforcement corridors are US-97 and US-20, and Central Oregon sees a lot of out-of-state plates. An out-of-state licence does not change the Oregon process.
  • The city also issues parking citations on its own system, separate from the circuit court, with its own appeal deadline.
  • Oregon's parking trap applies here too: a 'written explanation' on a parking citation waives your right to a hearing. If contesting is the goal, request the hearing.

2How much will it cost?

Oregon sets fines by statute and the court adds its own costs, so the amount on the citation is the amount you are arguing about. Parking citations are a separate city process on a separate system.

Don’t just look at the fine. For a moving violation, the real cost is the fine plus the insurance increase, which can last up to three years. Oregon does not use a point system. The DMV keeps your convictions on a driving record, and too many of them can put you into the Driver Improvement Program and cost you your licence, so the record still matters even though there are no points to count.

Answer three questions. There is nothing to type — no name, no citation number. We only record which options people choose (anonymously, so we know which cities and questions need work); the recommendation itself is calculated in your browser.

4Can traffic school save my record?

Oregon has no statewide ticket-dismissal course. Individual courts do offer deferred sentencing or accept a course in exchange for dismissal, so the only reliable answer is the one your court gives you.

5Do I need a lawyer?

For a simple moving violation a lawyer typically costs $250-$500 typical for an Oregon traffic citation. It’s usually worth it when the insurance increase, or your job (CDL, company car), outweighs that fee.

6Do I have to show up in court?

It depends on the ticket. Many moving violations can be handled online or by mail; others require a court date. Check the court named on your ticket before the deadline — missing a deadline can add penalties or suspend your license.

Common questions

Will paying the ticket raise my insurance?

For a moving violation, usually yes — often for up to three years. Non-moving and parking tickets usually don’t.

What if I just ignore it?

Don’t. Unpaid tickets can lead to extra fines, a suspended license, or a warrant. Every option above is better than ignoring it.
