Got a Traffic Ticket in Salem, OR? Here’s What To Do Next
A plain-English guide for Salem (Marion County) drivers: where to pay, whether to fight it, whether traffic school can save your record, and when a lawyer is worth it.
The 30-second answer
You usually have four options: pay the fine, contest it yourself, take traffic school, or hire a lawyer. The right choice depends on whether it’s a moving violation and whether you have a good-driving record to protect.

1Where do I pay the ticket?
Never pay through a random site. Use the court’s official portal:

Your ticket names the court handling your case. If you’re not sure which court, use the official finder:

Salem details, verified against the Marion County Circuit Court
- Salem is the state capital and the seat of Marion County, and its moving violations go to the Marion County Circuit Court, run by the Oregon Judicial Department.
- Oregon does not use points. Convictions are recorded on your DMV driving record, and enough of them route you into the Driver Improvement Program - which is where suspensions actually come from in this state.
- There is no statewide course that dismisses an Oregon ticket. Some courts offer deferred sentencing or accept a course in return for dismissal; whether Marion County does, for your violation, is the question to ask before paying.
- Paying is a conviction on your Oregon record. Because there is no point count to argue about, the record itself is the entire stakes.
- Salem's enforcement corridors are I-5 and OR-22, plus a state-government-heavy surface-street pattern. A State Police citation goes to the same circuit court.
- Salem issues city parking citations on a separate system from the circuit court - different deadlines, different review process. Do not assume a circuit-court process applies to a parking ticket.
- On an Oregon parking citation, sending in a 'written explanation' waives your right to a hearing: you are agreeing to be judged on the papers. If you want to contest it, ask for a hearing.
2How much will it cost?
Oregon sets fines by statute and the court adds its own costs, so the amount on the citation is the amount you are arguing about. Parking citations are a separate city process on a separate system.
Don’t just look at the fine. For a moving violation, the real cost is the fine plus the insurance increase, which can last up to three years. Oregon does not use a point system. The DMV keeps your convictions on a driving record, and too many of them can put you into the Driver Improvement Program and cost you your licence, so the record still matters even though there are no points to count.
3Should I fight it, or just pay?
| Option | Best when | Typical cost |
|---|---|---|
| Just pay | It’s a non-moving / fix-it ticket, or you don’t mind the point | Just the fine |
| Contest it yourself | The officer’s account is wrong, or the sign/light was unclear | Free (your time) |
| Traffic school | You’re eligible and want to keep the point off your record | Fine + small course fee |
| Hire a lawyer | A moving violation + a record you can’t afford to damage | $250-$500 typical for an Oregon traffic citation |

Answer three questions. There is nothing to type — no name, no citation number. We only record which options people choose (anonymously, so we know which cities and questions need work); the recommendation itself is calculated in your browser.
4Can traffic school save my record?
Oregon has no statewide ticket-dismissal course. Individual courts do offer deferred sentencing or accept a course in exchange for dismissal, so the only reliable answer is the one your court gives you.

5Do I need a lawyer?
For a simple moving violation a lawyer typically costs $250-$500 typical for an Oregon traffic citation. It’s usually worth it when the insurance increase, or your job (CDL, company car), outweighs that fee.
6Do I have to show up in court?
It depends on the ticket. Many moving violations can be handled online or by mail; others require a court date. Check the court named on your ticket before the deadline — missing a deadline can add penalties or suspend your license.

Common questions
Will paying the ticket raise my insurance?
For a moving violation, usually yes — often for up to three years. Non-moving and parking tickets usually don’t.
What if I just ignore it?
Don’t. Unpaid tickets can lead to extra fines, a suspended license, or a warrant. Every option above is better than ignoring it.
