Got a Traffic Ticket in McAllen, TX? Here’s What To Do Next
A plain-English guide for McAllen (Hidalgo County) drivers: where to pay, whether to fight it, whether traffic school can save your record, and when a lawyer is worth it.
The 30-second answer
You usually have four options: pay the fine, contest it yourself, take traffic school, or hire a lawyer. The right choice depends on whether it’s a moving violation and whether you have a good-driving record to protect.

1Where do I pay the ticket?
Never pay through a random site. Use the court’s official portal:

Your ticket names the court handling your case. If you’re not sure which court, use the official finder:

McAllen details, verified against McAllen Municipal Court
- McAllen tickets go to the McAllen Municipal Court (1601 N. Main St. is the city hall complex; the court's own page is mcallen.net/departments/court). The court's number is (956) 681-2900 and cashier hours are Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
- The online system is Municipal Online Services - and note this: McAllen's portal accepts payments for citations in warrant status, so an old ticket can often be cleared online instead of in person.
- Paying is a plea: a guilty or no-contest plea waives a jury trial and puts a conviction on the DPS record. If you want the case dismissed, request a driving safety course or deferred disposition first - the payment site is not the place to ask.
- Driving safety course in Texas: eligible moving violation, requested by your answer date, court costs plus the $10 state fee, an approved course from the TDLR list, completed and filed within the court's deadline - usually once every 12 months, never with a CDL.
- Deferred disposition works the same way as elsewhere in the state: plea, special expense fee, clean period, dismissal.
- The border adds a wrinkle. Hidalgo County runs its own Justice of the Peace courts for citations outside city limits, Texas DPS operates bilingual checkpoints with their own notices, and a Mexican insurance policy is not Texas proof of financial responsibility - so a 'no insurance' citation is dismissed only with a Texas-valid policy that was in force on the date of the stop.
- Proof-of-correction (registration, licence, equipment) tickets are dismissed by showing compliance to the clerk; do not pay them online at the full amount.
- An unresolved citation can become a warrant, and Texas blocks licence and registration transactions until it is cleared.
2How much will it cost?
Fines vary by violation and county. Confirm the amount with the municipal court named on your citation.
Don’t just look at the fine. For a moving violation, the real cost is the fine plus the insurance increase, which can last up to three years. Texas does not use a points system, but a conviction can still raise your insurance rate.
3Should I fight it, or just pay?
| Option | Best when | Typical cost |
|---|---|---|
| Just pay | It’s a non-moving / fix-it ticket, or you don’t mind the point | Just the fine |
| Contest it yourself | The officer’s account is wrong, or the sign/light was unclear | Free (your time) |
| Traffic school | You’re eligible and want to keep the point off your record | Fine + small course fee |
| Hire a lawyer | A moving violation + a record you can’t afford to damage | $150-$400 typical for a simple moving violation |

4Can traffic school save my record?
In Texas you can often take a driving safety course to get an eligible ticket dismissed - usually once every 12 months. You must request it by your answer date and pay the court costs plus the state fee.

5Do I need a lawyer?
For a simple moving violation a lawyer typically costs $150-$400 typical for a simple moving violation. It’s usually worth it when the insurance increase, or your job (CDL, company car), outweighs that fee.
6Do I have to show up in court?
It depends on the ticket. Many moving violations can be handled online or by mail; others require a court date. Check the court named on your ticket before the deadline — missing a deadline can add penalties or suspend your license.

Common questions
Will paying the ticket raise my insurance?
For a moving violation, usually yes — often for up to three years. Non-moving and parking tickets usually don’t.
What if I just ignore it?
Don’t. Unpaid tickets can lead to extra fines, a suspended license, or a warrant. Every option above is better than ignoring it.
