1Where do I pay the ticket?

Never pay through a random site. Use the court’s official portal:

Your ticket names the court handling your case. If you’re not sure which court, use the official finder:

  • Texas traffic citations are municipal court cases. A ticket written by a Port Arthur officer goes to Port Arthur Municipal Court; one written by a county deputy, constable or DPS trooper outside the city limits goes to the Justice of the Peace precinct for that area instead. The court name printed on the citation tells you which one you have, and the two have different payment routes.
  • Pay or dispute through the court's own portal: City of Port Arthur Municipal Court online payments. Texas city courts run on municipalonlinepayments.com, so you look the case up by citation number and it shows the amount that is actually due on the case today - not the number written on the citation.
  • Port Arthur is on the Sabine and the Gulf, with refinery traffic and highway 69/96 enforcement, and Jefferson County runs its own JP precincts alongside the city court.
  • Texas has no points system, but a conviction still ends up on the driving record that insurers price - which is the whole reason the dismissal routes below matter.
  • The record tool in Texas is the driving safety course (DSC) dismissal. On an eligible ticket you can usually take a state-approved course once every 12 months and have the charge dismissed, but you must request it by your answer date. Paying first closes that door, so decide the route before you pay anything.
  • Many Texas municipal courts also offer deferred disposition: a probation period where the case is dismissed if you stay clean and meet the conditions. It is a different route from the DSC dismissal, and courts generally will not let you use both - ask the court before the answer date which fits your charge.
  • Approved DSC providers are listed by the state: TDLR driving safety course provider search. Check your record at Texas DPS.

2How much will it cost?

Texas fines are set by statute for many violations, but the amount you owe is the fine plus the court costs that court charges, so the same speeding ticket costs different amounts in different cities. The court's portal shows the amount that is actually due on your case - that is the number to trust, not the citation.

Don’t just look at the fine. For a moving violation, the real cost is the fine plus the insurance increase, which can last up to three years. Texas does not use a points system, but a conviction can still raise your insurance rate.

4Can traffic school save my record?

In Texas you can often take a driving safety course to get an eligible ticket dismissed - usually once every 12 months. You must request it by your answer date and pay the court costs plus the state fee.

5Do I need a lawyer?

For a simple moving violation a lawyer typically costs $150-$400 typical for a simple moving violation. It’s usually worth it when the insurance increase, or your job (CDL, company car), outweighs that fee.

6Do I have to show up in court?

It depends on the ticket. Many moving violations can be handled online or by mail; others require a court date. Check the court named on your ticket before the deadline — missing a deadline can add penalties or suspend your license.

What if I just ignore it?

Don’t. Unpaid tickets can lead to extra fines, a suspended license, or a warrant. Every option above is better than ignoring it.
