Got a Traffic Ticket in Plano, TX? Here’s What To Do Next
A plain-English guide for Plano (Collin County) drivers: where to pay, whether to fight it, whether traffic school can save your record, and when a lawyer is worth it.
The 30-second answer
You usually have four options: pay the fine, contest it yourself, take traffic school, or hire a lawyer. The right choice depends on whether it’s a moving violation and whether you have a good-driving record to protect.

1Where do I pay the ticket?
Never pay through a random site. Use the court’s official portal:
🔗 Plano Municipal Court - fine payment information (online, mail, in person)
Your ticket names the court handling your case. If you’re not sure which court, use the official finder:
🔗 Plano Municipal Court - handle your citations (pay, extensions, dismissals)
Plano details, verified against Plano Municipal Court and Collin County JP 3
- A city citation goes to the Plano Municipal Court at the Raymond Robinson Justice Center, 900 E 15th St, Plano, TX 75074 - 972-941-2199, court@plano.gov. By mail: P.O. Box 860828, Plano, TX 75086-0828. Counter hours are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday 7:30am-4:30pm, Thursday 8:30am-4:30pm.
- Pay online at the city's online payment system. Two things the court warns about: most tickets do not appear online until about three days after the offence, and you are still responsible for making an appearance within 15 calendar days of the offence date - so an offline ticket is not extra time.
- Plano publishes its real fine numbers (rare - most Texas cities do not): speeding 1-10 mph over = $184, 11 over = $189, 20 over = $234, 25 over = $334; a construction zone adds $50 to the same bands (1-10 over = $234). Other published fines: red light $234, stop sign $194, no insurance (first offence) $331, driving while licence invalid $281, expired or no registration $121, passing a school bus $659, handicap-zone parking $514. Full table: Offenses and Fines.
- Trap - asking for more time has a price. The court's fine-payment page says that by requesting an extension to pay you enter a plea of nolo contendere and waive your right to a jury trial, a driving safety course and deferred disposition. If you might want this ticket dismissed, do not simply ask for an extension.
- Dismissal routes, each with its own rules: Dismissals hub, plus Deferred Disposition, Driving Safety Course and Insurance Citations (proof of insurance can dismiss a no-insurance ticket).
- County citations: Collin County Justice of the Peace Precinct 3 sits in Plano - 920 E. Park Blvd, Suite 210, Plano, TX 75074, 972-881-3051 (JP 3 page). A sliver of Plano also lies in Denton County, so a citation from a county officer there would go to a Denton County JP instead.
2How much will it cost?
Plano publishes its actual fine schedule: speeding 1-10 mph over is $184 and 25 over is $334, with $50 added in a construction zone. See the full table on the court's Offenses and Fines page.
Don’t just look at the fine. For a moving violation, the real cost is the fine plus the insurance increase, which can last up to three years. Texas does not use a points system, but a conviction can still raise your insurance rate.
3Should I fight it, or just pay?
| Option | Best when | Typical cost |
|---|---|---|
| Just pay | It’s a non-moving / fix-it ticket, or you don’t mind the point | Just the fine |
| Contest it yourself | The officer’s account is wrong, or the sign/light was unclear | Free (your time) |
| Traffic school | You’re eligible and want to keep the point off your record | Fine + small course fee |
| Hire a lawyer | A moving violation + a record you can’t afford to damage | $150-$400 typical for a simple moving violation |

Answer three questions. There is nothing to type — no name, no citation number. We only record which options people choose (anonymously, so we know which cities and questions need work); the recommendation itself is calculated in your browser.
4Can traffic school save my record?
In Texas you can often take a driving safety course to get an eligible ticket dismissed - usually once every 12 months. You must request it by your answer date and pay the court costs plus the state fee.

5Do I need a lawyer?
For a simple moving violation a lawyer typically costs $150-$400 typical for a simple moving violation. It’s usually worth it when the insurance increase, or your job (CDL, company car), outweighs that fee.
6Do I have to show up in court?
It depends on the ticket. Many moving violations can be handled online or by mail; others require a court date. Check the court named on your ticket before the deadline — missing a deadline can add penalties or suspend your license.

Common questions
Will paying the ticket raise my insurance?
For a moving violation, usually yes — often for up to three years. Non-moving and parking tickets usually don’t.
What if I just ignore it?
Don’t. Unpaid tickets can lead to extra fines, a suspended license, or a warrant. Every option above is better than ignoring it.
