A plain-English guide for Boca Raton (Palm Beach County) drivers: where to pay, whether to fight it, whether traffic school can save your record, and when a lawyer is worth it.

1Where do I pay the ticket?

Never pay through a random site. Use the court’s official portal:

🔗 Palm Beach County Clerk of Courts - pay a citation, elect school or set a hearing

Your ticket names the court handling your case. If you’re not sure which court, use the official finder:

Boca Raton details, verified against the Palm Beach County Clerk

  • Boca Raton citations are Palm Beach County cases handled by the county Clerk of Courts, which takes the fine, the school election and the hearing request. The city police write them; the Clerk decides nothing about guilt but controls every process step.
  • Florida lets you elect a 4-hour Basic Driver Improvement course to keep the points off your record: adjudication is withheld and no points are assessed. You generally have 30 days from the citation, once in a 12-month period, and the election is made with the Clerk, not the police department.
  • Florida assesses 3, 4 or 6 points per moving violation, suspending at 12 points in 12 months, 18 in 18 or 24 in 36. Points stay on your record three years.
  • The fine is the state penalty schedule plus Palm Beach County surcharges, printed on the citation - which is why the same offence costs a different amount in Broward or Martin County.
  • Check your own point total and licence status at FLHSMV Driver Licence Check rather than waiting for the suspension letter.
  • Missing the deadline triggers a failure to appear: licence suspension plus a reinstatement fee on top of the fine.
  • Boca Raton is on I-95 and the Florida Turnpike, both heavily patrolled; a Florida Highway Patrol citation is still a Palm Beach County case at the same Clerk.
  • The sequence that matters: elect the course or request the hearing before paying. A full payment is a conviction and ends the school option.

2How much will it cost?

In Florida the fine for a traffic infraction comes from a statewide penalty schedule plus county surcharges, and the total is printed on the citation the officer hands you. The Clerk of Courts collects it, and the same offence costs different amounts in different counties because of the surcharges.

Don’t just look at the fine. For a moving violation, the real cost is the fine plus the insurance increase, which can last up to three years. Florida adds 3, 4 or 6 points per moving violation and suspends at 12 points in 12 months, 18 in 18, or 24 in 36. Points stay on your record three years.

4Can traffic school save my record?

Florida lets you elect a 4-hour Basic Driver Improvement course to keep points off your record, generally within 30 days of the citation and once in a 12-month period. That election is the single biggest decision on a Miami moving violation.

5Do I need a lawyer?

For a simple moving violation a lawyer typically costs $250-$500 typical for a simple Florida moving violation. It’s usually worth it when the insurance increase, or your job (CDL, company car), outweighs that fee.

6Do I have to show up in court?

It depends on the ticket. Many moving violations can be handled online or by mail; others require a court date. Check the court named on your ticket before the deadline — missing a deadline can add penalties or suspend your license.

Common questions

Will paying the ticket raise my insurance?

For a moving violation, usually yes — often for up to three years. Non-moving and parking tickets usually don’t.

What if I just ignore it?

Don’t. Unpaid tickets can lead to extra fines, a suspended license, or a warrant. Every option above is better than ignoring it.
