1Where do I pay the ticket?

Never pay through a random site. Use the court’s official portal:

Your ticket names the court handling your case. If you’re not sure which court, use the official finder:

Fort Myers details, verified against the Lee County Clerk

  • Fort Myers citations are Lee County cases handled by the county Clerk of Courts, which collects the fine, takes the school election and sets any hearing.
  • Florida lets you elect a 4-hour Basic Driver Improvement course to keep the points off your record: adjudication is withheld and no points are assessed. You generally have 30 days from the citation, once in a 12-month period, and the election is made with the Clerk, not the police department.
  • Florida adds 3, 4 or 6 points per moving violation, with suspension at 12 in 12 months, 18 in 18 or 24 in 36, and points stay on the record for three years.
  • Fines come from the state's penalty schedule plus Lee County surcharges, printed on the citation. The county line genuinely changes the price.
  • Lee County runs a large volume of citations on I-75, US-41 and the Midpoint Bridge; a Florida Highway Patrol citation is filed as a Lee County case at the same Clerk.
  • Check your licence and point status at FLHSMV Driver Licence Check - relevant in a county where a lot of drivers hold out-of-state and seasonal licences.
  • Out-of-state drivers are not exempt: Florida reports the conviction to your home state, and your home DMV generally adds its own points on top.
  • Failing to respond in time creates a failure to appear - a licence suspension and a reinstatement fee. Responding on time, even to contest, avoids that entirely.

2How much will it cost?

In Florida the fine for a traffic infraction comes from a statewide penalty schedule plus county surcharges, and the total is printed on the citation the officer hands you. The Clerk of Courts collects it, and the same offence costs different amounts in different counties because of the surcharges.

Don’t just look at the fine. For a moving violation, the real cost is the fine plus the insurance increase, which can last up to three years. Florida adds 3, 4 or 6 points per moving violation and suspends at 12 points in 12 months, 18 in 18, or 24 in 36. Points stay on your record three years.

4Can traffic school save my record?

Florida lets you elect a 4-hour Basic Driver Improvement course to keep points off your record, generally within 30 days of the citation and once in a 12-month period. That election is the single biggest decision on a Miami moving violation.

5Do I need a lawyer?

For a simple moving violation a lawyer typically costs $250-$500 typical for a simple Florida moving violation. It’s usually worth it when the insurance increase, or your job (CDL, company car), outweighs that fee.

6Do I have to show up in court?

It depends on the ticket. Many moving violations can be handled online or by mail; others require a court date. Check the court named on your ticket before the deadline — missing a deadline can add penalties or suspend your license.

Common questions

Will paying the ticket raise my insurance?

For a moving violation, usually yes — often for up to three years. Non-moving and parking tickets usually don’t.

What if I just ignore it?

Don’t. Unpaid tickets can lead to extra fines, a suspended license, or a warrant. Every option above is better than ignoring it.
