A plain-English guide for Clearwater (Pinellas County) drivers: where to pay, whether to fight it, whether traffic school can save your record, and when a lawyer is worth it.

The 30-second answer

1Where do I pay the ticket?

Never pay through a random site. Use the court’s official portal:

🔗 Pinellas County Clerk of Courts - pay a citation, elect school or set a hearing

Your ticket names the court handling your case. If you’re not sure which court, use the official finder:

Clearwater details, verified against the Pinellas County Clerk

  • Clearwater citations are Pinellas County cases, handled by the county Clerk of Courts - the Clerk takes the payment, the school election and the hearing request, whatever agency wrote the ticket.
  • Florida lets you elect a 4-hour Basic Driver Improvement course to keep the points off your record: adjudication is withheld and no points are assessed. You generally have 30 days from the citation, once in a 12-month period, and the election is made with the Clerk, not the police department.
  • Florida's point schedule is 3, 4 or 6 per moving violation, with suspension at 12 in 12 months, 18 in 18 or 24 in 36; points remain on your record three years.
  • Fines are the state penalty schedule plus Pinellas County surcharges, and the citation prints the total - so the same violation costs more or less than in Hillsborough or Pasco.
  • Pinellas County also issues a large volume of red-light camera and school-zone camera citations, which are handled administratively rather than as moving violations and generally do not carry the same point consequence as a police citation. Check which type you received.
  • Check your own licence and point status at FLHSMV Driver Licence Check.
  • Clearwater is on US-19 and the Courtney Campbell Causeway, and a Florida Highway Patrol citation is filed as a Pinellas County case.
  • Missing the response deadline produces the Florida failure to appear - suspension plus a reinstatement fee - so respond even if you intend to contest.

2How much will it cost?

In Florida the fine for a traffic infraction comes from a statewide penalty schedule plus county surcharges, and the total is printed on the citation the officer hands you. The Clerk of Courts collects it, and the same offence costs different amounts in different counties because of the surcharges.

Don’t just look at the fine. For a moving violation, the real cost is the fine plus the insurance increase, which can last up to three years. Florida adds 3, 4 or 6 points per moving violation and suspends at 12 points in 12 months, 18 in 18, or 24 in 36. Points stay on your record three years.

3Should I fight it, or just pay?

4Can traffic school save my record?

Florida lets you elect a 4-hour Basic Driver Improvement course to keep points off your record, generally within 30 days of the citation and once in a 12-month period. That election is the single biggest decision on a Miami moving violation.

5Do I need a lawyer?

For a simple moving violation a lawyer typically costs $250-$500 typical for a simple Florida moving violation. It’s usually worth it when the insurance increase, or your job (CDL, company car), outweighs that fee.

6Do I have to show up in court?

It depends on the ticket. Many moving violations can be handled online or by mail; others require a court date. Check the court named on your ticket before the deadline — missing a deadline can add penalties or suspend your license.

Common questions

Will paying the ticket raise my insurance?

For a moving violation, usually yes — often for up to three years. Non-moving and parking tickets usually don’t.

What if I just ignore it?

Don’t. Unpaid tickets can lead to extra fines, a suspended license, or a warrant. Every option above is better than ignoring it.
