Got a Traffic Ticket in Tallahassee, FL? Here’s What To Do Next
A plain-English guide for Tallahassee (Leon County) drivers: where to pay, whether to fight it, whether traffic school can save your record, and when a lawyer is worth it.
The 30-second answer
You usually have four options: pay the fine, contest it yourself, take traffic school, or hire a lawyer. The right choice depends on whether it’s a moving violation and whether you have a good-driving record to protect.

1Where do I pay the ticket?
Never pay through a random site. Use the court’s official portal:
🔗 Florida county clerks payment portal (MyFloridaCounty) - use the clerk named on your citation
Your ticket names the court handling your case. If you’re not sure which court, use the official finder:
🔗 Leon County Clerk of Court and Comptroller
Tallahassee details, verified against the Leon County Clerk of Court
- Civil traffic infractions in Florida are not filed in a courtroom. They are handled by the Clerk of the Circuit Court for the county where you were cited, and the clerk's office is where the money and the paperwork go - Leon County Clerk of Court and Comptroller.
- You have 30 days to choose, and the three choices are: pay (that is an adjudication of guilt, with points on your Florida record), elect Basic Driver Improvement school (a 4-hour course; adjudication is withheld and no points are assessed), or request a hearing before a Traffic Hearing Officer to contest it. Doing nothing is not one of them.
- Basic Driver Improvement is the Florida record-saver, but it has limits: you may elect it once in any 12-month period, it is not available to commercial driver's licence holders, and certain offences are excluded. The state's list of approved schools is at FLHSMV driver improvement schools.
- Florida's point thresholds are statutory, not discretionary: 12 points in 12 months is a 30-day suspension, 18 in 18 months is three months, and 24 in 36 months is 12 months. You can see your own record through FLHSMV's driver licence check.
- If you pay late you owe a late fee as well as the fine; a long enough non-payment can suspend your Florida licence and send the debt to the state's collection process, which adds a collection fee. Paying or electing school is always cheaper than ignoring the citation.
- Many Florida counties can be paid through the state's county portal, MyFloridaCounty.com, which is a legitimate payment route operated for the clerks - and it is safer than any site that is not run by the clerk or the state.
- Tallahassee sits in Leon County, so the citation goes to the Leon County Clerk of Court and Comptroller - not to the Tallahassee Police Department and not to a courtroom. The clerk keeps the case file, takes the money and processes an election to attend school.
- Leon County traffic includes a lot of university traffic around Florida State and Florida A&M, plus Highway Patrol enforcement on I-10 and US-27. A trooper's citation is still paid through the same county clerk as a city ticket; only the issuing agency differs.
- Leon County surcharges are added to the statewide fine schedule, so the total on a Tallahassee citation is higher than the bare statutory amount. The clerk's figure is the one that counts.
- The county courts building in Tallahassee is where a Traffic Hearing Officer sits for contested citations - you must request that hearing within the 30-day window, in the same period you would otherwise pay.
2How much will it cost?
In Florida the fine for a traffic infraction comes from a statewide penalty schedule plus county surcharges, and the total is printed on the citation the officer hands you. The clerk's figure is the real number - and if you pay late, a late fee is added on top.
Don’t just look at the fine. For a moving violation, the real cost is the fine plus the insurance increase, which can last up to three years. Florida adds 3, 4 or 6 points per moving violation and suspends at 12 points in 12 months, 18 in 18, or 24 in 36. Points stay on your record three years.
3Should I fight it, or just pay?
| Option | Best when | Typical cost |
|---|---|---|
| Just pay | It’s a non-moving / fix-it ticket, or you don’t mind the point | Just the fine |
| Contest it yourself | The officer’s account is wrong, or the sign/light was unclear | Free (your time) |
| Traffic school | You’re eligible and want to keep the point off your record | Fine + small course fee |
| Hire a lawyer | A moving violation + a record you can’t afford to damage | $250-$500 typical for a simple moving violation |

4Can traffic school save my record?
Florida lets you elect a 4-hour Basic Driver Improvement course to keep points off your record, generally within 30 days of the citation and once in a 12-month period. That election is the single biggest decision on a Miami moving violation.

5Do I need a lawyer?
For a simple moving violation a lawyer typically costs $250-$500 typical for a simple moving violation. It’s usually worth it when the insurance increase, or your job (CDL, company car), outweighs that fee.
6Do I have to show up in court?
It depends on the ticket. Many moving violations can be handled online or by mail; others require a court date. Check the court named on your ticket before the deadline — missing a deadline can add penalties or suspend your license.

Common questions
Will paying the ticket raise my insurance?
For a moving violation, usually yes — often for up to three years. Non-moving and parking tickets usually don’t.
What if I just ignore it?
Don’t. Unpaid tickets can lead to extra fines, a suspended license, or a warrant. Every option above is better than ignoring it.
