Got a Traffic Ticket in Hialeah, FL? Here’s What To Do Next
A plain-English guide for Hialeah (Miami-Dade County) drivers: where to pay, whether to fight it, whether traffic school can save your record, and when a lawyer is worth it.
The 30-second answer
You usually have four options: pay the fine, contest it yourself, take traffic school, or hire a lawyer. The right choice depends on whether it’s a moving violation and whether you have a good-driving record to protect.

1Where do I pay the ticket?
Never pay through a random site. Use the court’s official portal:
🔗 Miami-Dade Clerk of Courts - traffic and parking - pay a citation, elect school or set a hearing
Your ticket names the court handling your case. If you’re not sure which court, use the official finder:

Hialeah details, verified against the Miami-Dade Clerk
- Hialeah citations are Miami-Dade County cases, and the Clerk's own traffic page is where you work out which type you have: a civil traffic infraction (moving or non-moving, not punishable by jail, no jury trial and no right to appointed counsel) or a criminal traffic violation, which is a misdemeanour and where an arrest is possible.
- That distinction decides everything. A civil infraction can be paid, deferred to school or contested on paper; a criminal traffic violation is a criminal case with a criminal calendar and should not be handled at a payment window.
- Florida lets you elect a 4-hour Basic Driver Improvement course to keep the points off your record: adjudication is withheld and no points are assessed. You generally have 30 days from the citation, once in a 12-month period, and the election is made with the Clerk, not the police department.
- Miami-Dade also handles parking citations separately - those are written to a vehicle for a county ordinance or state statute violation, and they are paid through the Clerk's parking route, not the moving-violation process. Hialeah writes a lot of both.
- Florida assesses 3, 4 or 6 points per moving violation and suspends at 12 in 12 months, 18 in 18 or 24 in 36; points remain for three years.
- Fines come from the state schedule plus Miami-Dade County surcharges, printed on the citation. The Clerk's certified-copy and payment services are all on the same county page.
- Check your licence and point status at FLHSMV Driver Licence Check.
- Hialeah's enforcement is dense surface-street enforcement rather than interstate work, which is why the civil-versus-criminal question - and the parking-versus-moving question - comes up so often here.
- Civil infractions are identified by a combination of seven numbers and letters on the citation, per the Clerk. Read that before deciding what you are dealing with.
2How much will it cost?
In Florida the fine for a traffic infraction comes from a statewide penalty schedule plus county surcharges, and the total is printed on the citation the officer hands you. The Clerk of Courts collects it, and the same offence costs different amounts in different counties because of the surcharges.
Don’t just look at the fine. For a moving violation, the real cost is the fine plus the insurance increase, which can last up to three years. Florida adds 3, 4 or 6 points per moving violation and suspends at 12 points in 12 months, 18 in 18, or 24 in 36. Points stay on your record three years.
3Should I fight it, or just pay?
| Option | Best when | Typical cost |
|---|---|---|
| Just pay | It’s a non-moving / fix-it ticket, or you don’t mind the point | Just the fine |
| Contest it yourself | The officer’s account is wrong, or the sign/light was unclear | Free (your time) |
| Traffic school | You’re eligible and want to keep the point off your record | Fine + small course fee |
| Hire a lawyer | A moving violation + a record you can’t afford to damage | $250-$500 typical for a simple Florida moving violation |

4Can traffic school save my record?
Florida lets you elect a 4-hour Basic Driver Improvement course to keep points off your record, generally within 30 days of the citation and once in a 12-month period. That election is the single biggest decision on a Miami moving violation.

5Do I need a lawyer?
For a simple moving violation a lawyer typically costs $250-$500 typical for a simple Florida moving violation. It’s usually worth it when the insurance increase, or your job (CDL, company car), outweighs that fee.
6Do I have to show up in court?
It depends on the ticket. Many moving violations can be handled online or by mail; others require a court date. Check the court named on your ticket before the deadline — missing a deadline can add penalties or suspend your license.

Common questions
Will paying the ticket raise my insurance?
For a moving violation, usually yes — often for up to three years. Non-moving and parking tickets usually don’t.
What if I just ignore it?
Don’t. Unpaid tickets can lead to extra fines, a suspended license, or a warrant. Every option above is better than ignoring it.
